23Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.24God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
Most of us don’t usually see ourselves as worship leaders (unless we are literally in the worship leading role in the worship ministry). Too often we mistake the worship ministry as the only ‘worship ministry’ (the only ministry where worship happens).
In these verses, Jesus makes clear that the true worshippers God seeks, worship Him in the Spirit and in truth. It clearly implies true worship is not confined to any one ministry or role in the church. Every follower of Christ is able to truly worship God despite their ministry or roles.
Perhaps the ‘worship ministry’ is not named appropriately. Perhaps it’s a misleading name for a ministry. After all, the PA ministry could be a ‘worship ministry’ if every member worshipped God in Spirit and in truth. The Creative Presentation team could be a ‘worship team’, or the visuals team members be referred to as worship members. Same goes of those in the logistics ministry, pastoral leaders, KFC teachers or our preachers. This isn’t meant to suggest an anarchy of ministry names :). It’s simply a reflection to surface the truth of how God views worshippers (those who worship in Spirit and in truth).
It also means we could conclude that by God’s definition, true worship leaders are not confined to any one ministry. We can serve God as worship leaders regardless of our roles. If our lives and service to God models for others what worshipping Him in Spirit and in truth looks like, we are worship leading. We are worship leading when we are ministering to God and people, out of a deep connection with His Spirit, when we encourage and guide others with His Word, when we speak truth to direct and lead others to God.
Does your life (outside of ministry) model a true worshipper who worships God in Spirit and in truth?
If someone were to model after you in your service to God, would they be following a true worship leader?
Ask God how He would like you to grow as a worship leader. Listen for what the Holy Spirit says to you. How will you respond?
